“Memento Mori” means “Remember your death,” and that’s what we do on Ash Wednesday. Ashes aren’t a sign of our sin, but rather of our mortality, and of the fact that we should live in a way that makes us feel prepared for death. When the priest makes the cross on our foreheads (or sprinkles us with ashes), he says, “Remember, man, you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”
